Leeds Book Awards 16th May

Ten members of the Leeds Book Awards group were lucky enough to attend the awards ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall.

After months of reading and reviewing the books, then voting for our favourite novels it was time to find out which book had won.

The event was compared by the poet Toria Garbutt who performed some of her work before introducing the authors.

Each author spoke about their book before the floor was opened to a Q&A session, our question for Candy Gourlay was “What inspired you to want to learn to read?” Which prompted a very interesting reply and a story about her grandma.

The winners were announced. The 11-14 section was won by Steve Tasane’s Child I and the 14-16 winner was the very popular Rosie Loves Jack by Mel Darbon.

After the ceremony our students had their books signed by the authors and had a chance to chat with their favourite writers.

All the books from the competition are available from the library, and our reviews can be read on the Leeds Book Awards website.
