Grange Student Strikes Boxing Gold!

Harris Akbar shows off his Commonwealth gold medal with Post 16 Pastoral Manager Imran Sabir.

Bradford boxing prospect and Grange student Harris Akbar returned from a three week trip to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa last week with a gold medal.  This was the latest accolade in his young career and the only winner's medal for England at the event.  Akbar, aged 16 is in Year 12 at Grange and trains at the Bradford Police & College Boxing Academy.   Before the event he carried an unbeaten record which he was keen to retain beyond his biggest competition yet.

Having spent two weeks on a training camp in New Zealand, the team traveled to Samoah for the event to compete against the best talent from around the Commonwealth.  He was boxing in the 16-18 age category at 69kg where he outpointed his Northern Ireland's Brett McGinty in the final on Thursday 10th September.

Harris, who now has his focus set on the European Championships in Poland this November described the trip as "a great experience."

Grange Headteacher Nick Bell said "We are really pleased for Harris on this latest achievement.  He did himself, his family, his team, his school and the city of Bradford very proud.  We look forward to following his career and will do everything possible to support him."
