Performing as Equals (#Equality)

Partnership with local theatre groups leads drama club to City Hall performance on International Womens Day

On Tuesday 8th March, fourteen students from Grange performed at City Hall to mark International Women’s Day.  The performance was the culmination of a series of performing arts workshops by local theatre company Freedom Studios, as well as other opportunities provided by Mind the Gap.

Freedom Studios have been running a weekly drama club at Grange since September where they have been developing the performance which focuses on ‘Equality.’  Sharing the stage with Grange were students from Carlton Bolling School.

“The workshops provided by Freedom Studios and Mind the Gap have been really beneficial in building student confidence and developing their communication skills whilst learning about history and equality.  It is also an honour for the students to perform again at such a unique and beautiful venue – just rewards for their hard work and commitment."  Leila Airey, Head of Performing Arts

The event also marked the official DVD launch of the Freedom Studios and Mind the Gap film “the Magna Carta…in ten minutes!” which marked the end of the city’s celebration of the 800th year of the Magna Carta.  Students from Grange Technology College and other schools from across the city took part in a range of activities as part of this celebration.  Featuring performers from Mind the Gap, the film explores ties between the Magna Carta and human rights.

“I was so glad the school took part in this as I didn’t really know what the Magna Carta was or what it meant before – I have learned so much!”  Sara, Year 9
