We're improving our sports facilities!

Grassroots sport in Bradford is set to benefit from a major cash injection following the news that The Southfield Grange Trust have been awarded a grant of £330,000 from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund.

The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund is funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England. It is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 15,000 grants worth nearly £580m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of just under £800m – over £1.4bn of investment into the grassroots game.

The grant will enable us to replace the older of our two pitches with a third generation (3G) facility, whilst the existing 3G pitch will benefit from floodlights and new fencing. This will greatly improve the facilities available, both to the 2100 students who attend the schools and the wider community who can access the facilities after-hours through the Southfield Grange Sports Centre. Additional work is also being carried out to reinstate and fully utilize the changing facilities located next to the new pitch.

The new facility will comprise: One modern full size 3G pitch and a ‘nine-aside’ 3G pitch, both with floodlights and changing facilities.

By providing more high-quality facilities, coupled with coaching at the appropriate age group, the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund aims to improve the experience for regular players as well as attracting new players to the game. Many of the new state-of-the-art facilities will serve to strengthen the connection between professional football clubs and their local communities, particularly in the most deprived areas of the country, through the professional clubs’ community trusts’ outreach work.

Ruth Bowditch, Campus Business Manager at The Southfield Grange Trust said: “This is a great opportunity for our students and many other local organisations to benefit from first class facilities, improving grass-roots sport at a well-known and accessible community location.  This is also a timely improvement which will benefit the scholars at our new Sixth Form Football Academy.”

“We are delighted to have gained access from the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund. The improvements to our old pitch were needed and the installation of floodlights at the pitch at the south end of our site is a welcome addition which will enable us to offer greater capacity for bookings.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Congratulations should go to The Southfield Grange Trust for working with the West Riding FA to secure this Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund grant.

“Since 2000, the Foundation has awarded 548 grants worth £20.2m across West Riding towards grassroots sports projects worth nearly £41m, with money generously provided by our funders: the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England.”
